A Clifton police officer en route to a crime was hospitalized following a collision between a police cruiser and a civilian vehicle on Tuesday, Jan. 7, authorities confirmed. The crash occurred at 11:24 a.m. at the intersection of Broad Street and Van Houten Avenue, Clifton Police Lt. Robert Anderson said. According to Lt. Anderson, the civilian vehicle's occupant sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene but declined transport to the hospital. A stolen car pursuit that began in Clifton ended with a crash in Newark and three occupants in the wind, authorities said. Clifton Police Officer Matthew Rugel was in the area of Broad Street and Elmwood Drive when he spotted the 2020 Audi, which had been reported stolen out of Hazlet and connected to subsequent crimes, shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2.
