Buzzer-Beater Takedown Makes Sebastian Rivera First Rutgers Wrestler To Medal At Olympics
Sebastian Rivera is going down in Rutgers University history. The Toms River native, who finished his final Scarlet Knight season as a grad student with a 30-1 record, became the university's first grappler to medal at the Olympic games. Rivera took home a bronze in the 65kg freestyle for Puerto Rico with a buzzer-beater takedown of Mongolia's Tulga Tumur-Ochir on Sunday, Aug. 11. NJ Hurdler McLaughlin-Levrone Close To Olympic Gold Repeat With Support From Family, HS Fans
New Jersey hurdler Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is cruising right to the gold. The Dunellen native is ten hurdles and one lap around the track from potentially achieving a very rare Olympic feat. McLaughlin-Levrone, who turned 25 on Wednesday, Aug. 7, coasted into the finals of the track and field women's 400-meter hurdles at Paris 2024, dominating her semifinal race on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Hezly Rivera got her gold. The 16-year-old Bergen County native, Team USA's youngest competitor, earned a gold medal alongside her four teammates at Paris Olympics 2024 in the finals on Tuesday, July 30. While Rivera didn't compete in the finals, she did help boost her team's score to qualify for the finals on the uneven bars, where she earned 13.900 (her beam score was dropped). Team USA will make its return to the Olympics in women's field hockey and a duo from New Jersey helped the 16-player squad earn a summer trip to France. The U.S. beat Japan 2-1 in the semifinals of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Olympic Qualifiers in Ranchi, India, on Thursday, Jan. 18.
