Joseph Maccagnano, a longtime Hoboken resident and Special Olympian, died on Saturday, Aug. 17 at the age of 58, according to a fundraiser set up for funeral expenses. Maccagnano worked at Hudson Community Enterprises in Jersey City for 27 years and competed at the Special Olympics for 40 years, being named Athlete of the Year in 2019, according to his obituary at the Jorge Rivera Funeral Home. Civilians teamed up with police to rescue a teenage girl who was struck and pinned beneath a vehicle Tuesday in North Bergen's Racetrack neighborhood, witnesses said. The victim, believed to be 15, was struck near a bus stop at the corner of Palisade Plaza and Woodcliff Avenue outside James J. Braddock Park shortly before 4:30 p.m. May 14, they said.
