Firefighters made quick work of a smoky rooftop blaze at the Macy's in the Paramus Park mall on Sunday. A large transformer in a rooftop parapet caught fire shortly after 12:30 p.m., Oct. 1. This story has been updated One firefighter suffered a minor injury while battling a four alarm fire that spread to two homes in Bayonne on Thursday, Sept. 21, authorities said. At 9:49 a.m, firefighters were on scene of a heavy fire in the rear of both 142 and 144 West 5th St., Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver said. The fire was declared under control at 10:57 a.m., Weaver said. An early Saturday evening fire ravaged a basement classroom in a Lyndhurst grammar school. Firefighters responding to the Washington School on Ridge Road were met by intense heat and smoke that obscured all visibility shortly after 6 p.m. Sept. 16, 1st Assistant Fire Chief Paul Haggerty said. A firefighter was hospitalized during a blaze Monday at a warehouse off Routes 17 and 46 in Hasbrouck Heights. Grace Presbyterian Church, a 99-year-old Montclair institution, suffered extensive damage after a three-alarm fire tore the building on Tuesday morning, August 15. Montclair firefighters rushed to Grove Street and Tuxedo Road at 8 a.m. and found the fire reaching from the basement to the roofline at the back of the church, Deputy Chief Robert Duncan said. Authorities are probing the cause of a pre-dawn fire Monday in a house undergoing renovations in Hillsdale.
