Traffic on a more-than-century-old bridge in Northern Westchester has been halted following the discovery of structural deficiencies, officials announced.
The Quaker Bridge, which carries Quaker Bridge Road over the Croton River in Cortlandt, was "red-flagged" and closed to vehicular traffic, Cortlandt town officials announced on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
The bridge, built in 1894, is owned and maintained by Westchester County. Plans had already been in place to replace it with a new structure, as it was known to be structurally impaired, town officials said.

Two races for top positions in two Westchester municipalities are now only separated by a handful of votes, including one matchup that was decided by a single vote.
According to unofficial election results released by Westchester County, the supervisor races in both Harrison and North Castle have finished in a near dead heat.
In Harrison, the Republican candidate for Supervisor, Richard Dionisio, received 1,698 votes, only 19 more than his opponent, Democratic candidate Mark Jaffe, who received 1,679.

A former high school teacher in the Hudson Valley is facing charges for allegedly sharing illicit photos and conversations with a teenager over social media, the district attorney’s office announced.
On Monday, Jan. 24, Westchester County District Attorney Mimi Rocah announced that former Salesian High School teacher Mariela Barajas, age 22, of Mount Vernon, was arraigned for allegedly disseminating indecent material to a 15-year-old.

Westchester Reveals Playland Park Attendance Numbers For July 4th Weekend
Thousands came out to Rye Playland Park over the holiday weekend as Westchester celebrated Independence Day and the return of normalcy following a dour year for holiday celebrations in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Nearly 25,000 people frequented the park over the holiday, where many enjoyed the park for the first time since 2019 after it was forced to shutter its doors as a safety precaution.

After Evading Capture, Westchester Man Sentenced To Prison Time For Forcibly Raping Teen Girl
A man who forcibly raped a teenage girl and managed to evade capture by police investigators for nearly a year has been sentenced to more than a decade in prison.
Port Chester resident Antonio Olivarez, 41, has been sentenced to 13 years in state prison after pleading guilty to first-degree rape, a violent felony, in May.
In addition to his prison term, Olivarez will serve 20 years of post-release supervision and will be required to register as a sex offender.
