Brownies were created in the United States at the end of the 19th century. The cross between cake and cookie soon became a popular dessert item.
The dessert was reportedly invented when a group of ladies wanted a cake-like snack that could fit in a boxed lunch. A Chicago chefat the Palmer House Hotel created the brownie for the ladies, though his recipe included walnuts and an apricot glaze. The Palmer House hotel still serves their brownies this way, according to National Day Calendar.
