New York City Declares Measles Public Health Emergency In Select ZIP Codes
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a public health emergency Tuesday, April 9, in select zip codes in Williamsburg, following a measles outbreak affecting the Orthodox Jewish community. As part of the declaration, unvaccinated individuals living in those ZIP codes who may have been exposed to measles will be required to receive the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine in order to protect others in the community and help curtail the ongoing outbreak, said the Mayor's office. Parents Will Be Held Accountable If They Violate Rockland State Of Emergency, County Exec Says
Under Rockland County's new state of emergency addressing the "measles outbreak," parents could face a misdemeanor charge and be fined if their unvaccinated child violates the declaration. Westchester health officials are working to alert the public about the first case of measles reported in the county, as Rockland County continues to struggle with a measles outbreak that has sickened 143 people. The county learned of the case on Friday, March 1, when the Westchester County Health Department was notified that a Monroe College student was diagnosed with measles.
