Summer is here! It is a time for playing outside, riding bikes, swimming in the pool, and building sandcastles at the beach. As COVID-19 cases continue to decline and restrictions are being lifted, many children are excited to return to summer camps this year. Recent AAP guidance supports children participating in these summer activities as they provide multiple benefits to children. Studies have shown that camps with proper safety measures in place have been successful at limiting COVID-19 spread, so it is important for parents, children, and caregivers to follow the recommended guidelines…

19: NY Unveils New Rules For Fairs, Festivals
As municipalities gear up for a busy summer filled with COVID-free activities, New York has laid out updated guidance for county fairs and local festivals. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that this summer, fairs, and festivals will be permitted to be held, with certain COVID-19 mandates in place to curtail any spread of the virus. Cuomo said that the Department of Health approval will be required for events with over 5,000 expected attendees, “consistent with the existing review process.” County fairs and local festivals must also ensure that the total number of attendees is limited s…

19 And The Heart: What We Now Know
During the COVID-19 pandemic, cardiovascular health remains a top health priority — with heart disease and stroke continuing to be the #1 and #5 leading causes of death in the U.S. There is a significant relationship between COVID-19 and cardiovascular disease, including more deaths from cardiovascular disease during the pandemic and serious heart conditions associated with an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19. Nearly a quarter of the people hospitalized with COVID-19 develop myocardial injury or injury to the heart tissue and a significant number of patients have develope…

19: Most Cases Transmitted By People Not Displaying Symptoms, New Study Reveals
Most COVID-19 cases are transmitted by people who do not exhibit symptoms, according to a new study by CDC researchers. The researchers, who used a mathematical approach to assess several scenarios, found that 59 percent of all infections came from asymptomatic transmission -- including those who are pre-symptomatic or never show any COVID symptoms. Most of those asymptomatic spreaders go on to become ill (35 percent), the researchers said, compared to 24 percent who never develop symptoms. "In addition to the identification and isolation of persons with symptomatic COVID-19, effective con…

What Parents Need To Know About
Mis-c
Dear Doctor, As the parent of three young kids, I’m kind of freaked out by the recent news that there’s a new life-threatening complication of COVID-19 in children. What do we know about this problem, and how worried should I be? Sincerely, “Panicked Parent” Dear Panicked: It’s totally understandable that you’re concerned about this new complication called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Since MIS-C is so new (it was first identified in April), there’s still a lot that we don’t know about it. But we are fairly confident that it’s related to the coronavirus as all o…

19: What You Need to Know
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says women who are pregnant should be monitored more closely than the general population since they are known to be at risk of severe viral illness. Pregnant women experience immunologic and physiologic changes which make them more susceptible to complications from viral respiratory infections. If you are pregnant, you should take the following preventative actions: Avoid people who are sick or who have been exposed to the virus. Clean your hands often using soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. C…

19: Do You Need To Sanitize Groceries? Experts Weigh In
Just when you thought you had all of your bases covered when it comes to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), now people are asking if they need to sanitize groceries. Most health officials, including the CDC and the FDA, are more concerned about people being infected at the grocery store by other people than the virus contaminating groceries. That’s why it’s important to stay at least 6 feet from other people at all times. And not to be afraid to ask someone to step back. The World Health Organization (WHO) said in addition to close person-to-person contact, people can pick up the virus by t…
