TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – This year's fifth-graders at Washington Irving Intermediate School were often high-spirited, but they were also exceptional, Principal Debbie Hand said in a goodbye speech to students.

“From the first day that we met you in September, we recognized that you were amazingly talented and remarkable students, which was proven each and every day throughout the school year,” she said.

Washington Irving fifth graders celebrated the end of their two years at the school and the transition to Sleepy Hollow Middle School during a special moving-up ceremony Friday morning.

Hand and other school officials and teachers praised the class for its accomplishments and skills. Students debuted a special goodbye video before singing “Lean on Me.” Representatives from the Double Tree Hotel were on hand to give out free Kindle Fires to students who had perfect attendance throughout their two years at the school.

Hand said she would always remember this year's class for its diverse interests and talents. The class members will be missed, she said.

“While it is difficult to say goodbye, in our hearts we know you are ready to move on and up,” Hand said.
