Three of the rookies have fathers who command local police departments: Timothy Jon Bonci is joining his father, Chief Timothy Bonci, as well as his uncle Alex, at the Town of Eastchester Police Department; Michael W. Campion, whose father, Norman, is police chief in Briarcliff, will work for Mount Vernon Police; and Paul F. Rescigno is the newest patrol officer in the Village of Elmsford where his father, Frank, is police commissioner, and pinned the police badge during a swearing-in ceremony in August.
Graduation ceremonies for the 138th basic recruit class took place at the EF International Language Center In Tarrytown, and were attended by about 300 family members, friends and fellow law enforcement officials
"We demanded their best and they gave it to us,'' said County Public Safety Commissioner George N. Longworth.
County Executive Rob Astorino reminded the rookies,"Police work has never been harder than it is today."
Astorino said that fortunately in Westchester "people respect the uniform (but) all of us can do our part to turn down the heat. . .by working together."
The county executive stressed that Hawthorne's police academy "is the best there is,'' and that officers are trained to use deadly force as a last resort, adding, "I will stand with you and I will have your back."
Rye Brook Police Chief Gregory Austin, as president of the County Chiefs of Police Association, told the newly-certified officers, "Always do the right thing. . .Your training never ends."
The county police academy at 2 Dana Road in Valhalla closed in September for a $9 million renovation, which is expected to take one year. In the meantime, the academy is operating from temporary quarters on Skyline Drive in Hawthorne.
