Wife Of ESPN Sportscaster, Hackley Grad Chris Berman Killed In Car Crash

Kathy Berman, the wife of longtime ESPN broadcaster, Hackley School graduate and former Westchester resident Chris Berman died on Tuesday in a two-car crash in Connecticut.

Kathy Berman, 67, was involved in the crash near Woodbury, Conn. on Tuesday with an 87-year-old man, who also died from the wounds suffered in the incident.

A state police report states that Berman was traveling east on Sherman Hill Road in Woodbury when she was struck a vehicle in front of her, with her vehicle veering off the roadway and down a small embankment before overturning into a body of water. The second driver struck a utility pole and landed in the center of the roadway on its roof. Both vehicles sustained heavy, disabling damage according to police.

The man was transported to Waterbury Hospital for treatment, but died from his wounds, The cause of the collision is still under investigation, police said.

Kathy Berman, a teacher who is a Middlebury, Conn., native, leaves behind her husband, who grew up in Irvington after being born in Greenwich, Conn., as well as two children, Meredith and Douglas.

"This is a devastating tragedy and difficult to comprehend," John Skipper, president of ESPN, said in a statement. "Chris is beloved by all his ESPN colleagues and for good reason: He has a huge heart and has given so much to so many over the years. We know how much his family means to him and all we can do at a moment like this is give him the love and support he will surely need at this hour. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris, Meredith, Doug and the entire family."
