TARRYTOWN, N.Y. The Transfiguration School's annual Christmas tree and wreath fundraiser was scheduled to last until 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, but most of the trees had already been sold by 2 p.m.
It's going very well, Christmas tree sale chair and parent Joe Agro said. The weather's cooperating. We started out with 120 trees, we've got about 20 left.
The annual fundraiser is sponsored by the school's Parents' Guild. It raises money for the Guild, which in turn supplies the school with things it needs.
Agro said volunteers had gotten to the school at 6 a.m. to set up the sale. Parents worked in two-hour shifts while students helped out to gain needed community service hours.
The cold weather wasn't a factor Saturday with a campfire providing warmth to the volunteers as they waited for the next customer to pull up to the school. Some volunteers got into the holiday season by wearing Santa hats.
Doreen Frasca bought her Christmas tree at the fundraiser. Her kids attend religious education at the Transfiguration Church and she said the fundraiser was a way to support the church and the local community.
This year's sale had another bonus for Frasca: her family wanted to get a smaller tree than usual.
They were the perfect size, she said.
