Sleepy Hollow To Observe Memorial Day

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Memorial Day means Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Irvington residents will gather to honor veterans. Each village has memorial ceremonies planned to honor local residents who served their country.

The Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow Memorial Day Parade will kick off at 9 a.m. Monday. Marchers will head out from Main Street in Tarrytown and proceed north on Route 9 into Sleepy Hollow. Once in Sleepy Hollow, they will turn left onto Beekman Avenue, south on North Washington Street and end at the war memorials at Patriot's Park.

The members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion will host a short Memorial Day service in Patriot's Park to honor those who have served and are currently serving.

The Irvington Memorial Day Services and Parade will begin at 10:45 a.m. in front of the War Memorials on Main Street. Marchers and residents will then head east on Main Street, turning right onto Route 9 and walk to Memorial Park. A second memorial service will take place at the park.

Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown residents will dedicate a new Gold Star Mothers memorial at 11 a.m. at Patriot's Park. Pearl Harbor survivor and WWII veteran Armando “Chick” Galella is leading the effort to pay tribute to mothers of sons or daughters who died in a war and honor those whose lives were sacrificed in war.

Sleepy Hollow will host a small ceremony at the Village Hall Firehouse after the Gold Star Mothers dedication.

Village offices in Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Irvington will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Warner Library and the Irvington Public Library also will be closed for the holiday.
