Ex-Tarrytown Teacher Dawn Finn Dies at 61

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. - Former Tarrytown teacher and resident, Dawn Nostrand Finn died Oct. 12 following a 10-year battle against cancer. She was 61.

Most recently of Blauvelt, N.Y., Finn was formerly an English teacher at the now-closed Washington Irving High School in Tarrytown. She went on to become heavily involved in the South Orangetown School District, where she was awarded the PTA Honorary Lifetime Award by New York State. 

Born on Oct. 20, 1949 in Mt. Vernon to the late Jo Ann and Charles Nostrand, Jr., her family eventually moved to Tarrytown. Finn went on to graduate from Sleepy Hollow High School in 1967 and from Mercy College in 1971.

Finn was a former director of Section 8 Housing Authority in White Plains. She went on to perform the same duties in Nyack, N.Y. as well as act as a property manager.

An active member of the Democratic Party, Finn had considered running for office prior to her illness. Finn was also very passionate about animals and wildlife, maintaining a Koi pond as well as a menagerie of Clausland Mountain wildlife in her home. 

Finn is survived by her husband Steve, her son Ryan, her stepchildren David and Sally Finn and Stacey and Cory Notrica, six grandchildren and numerous extended family members. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Tricia Nostrand-Gonzalez.

Friends and family may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at Hannemann Funeral Home in Nyack. A funeral mass is scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Catharine of Alexandria Church in Blauvelt, with burial to follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
