Stranded Kayaker Rescued In Bellport Bay Two Long Island Marine Bureau officers rescued a man after his kayak overturned.  Suffolk County Police Officers Terence McGovern and Jack Jantzen responded aboard Marine Mike to a 911 call from a man whose kayak overturned in Bellport Bay, between buoys 8 and 9, around 12:50 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 30. The officers located the kayaker, Diego Sponza, who was wearing a lifejacket but no wetsuit, and pulled him aboard their boat, police said. Sponza, age 35, of Shirley, was transported to the Bellport Marina and then to a local hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia.

Jet Ski Rider Injured In Suffolk County Bay After Hitting Sandbar A jet ski rider was rescued on Long Island after their vehicle hit a sandbar. The rescue took place around 11:13 a.m., Sunday, June 6, when South Country Ambulance was requested as mutual aid to the Mastic Beach Fire Department for a water rescue in New Old Inlet in Bellport Bay.  The rider had been thrown from the front of the jet ski after hitting the sandbar, suffering a broken ankle, said the South County Ambulance. Father, Son Stranded In Boat On Bellport Bay Rescued A father and son stranded in a boat on Bellport Bay were rescued by Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers. Jake Laznovsky, 32, of Mastic, and his father, Jim Laznovsky, 62, of Lindenhurst, were operating a 25-foot 1993 Cougar Cat in Bellport Bay the night of Thursday, May 16. Around 6 p.m., they say the craft ran aground inside of the New Inlet. Police say the men contacted a commercial salvage operator who tried and failed to reach the stranded vessel due to shallow waters.
