Sergeant Collapses, Dies Moments After Shift In Hudson Valley: 'Good Man Who Will Be Missed' A Hudson Valley police department is mourning the line-of-duty loss of a beloved sergeant who collapsed and died mere moments after completing his shift.  In a statement on Saturday, April 20, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office announced the death of Brewster Police Sergeant Richard Gurniak, who collapsed after hanging up his keys after his shift during the early morning hours on Saturday.  Despite efforts to save his life from a fellow Brewster officer and two members of the Sheriff's Office, Gurniak later died at Putnam Hospital from a heart attack at the age of 57. Five Hospitalized In Rollover, Two-Vehicle Crash Five people were hospitalized after a two-vehicle rollover crash in the area. It happened around 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 in Mahopac at West Lovell Street and Kia Ora Boulevard. One of the vehicles landed on its side, with all five of its occupants out of the vehicle when Mahopac Fire, EMS and Rescue and multiple units from Carmel Police arrived at the scene. The five were transported to Putnam Hospital for evaluation. A couple in the second vehicle involved declined medical transport after being checked by Medics and EMTs.
