I took city officials to task in this space for the ruthlessness that has spread across my once-proud city. In turn, I praise those who didn’t allow what Mayor Jerramiah Healy called “pure and random viciousness” to stand.
Authorities now have four people in custody in connection with the murders of Michael Muchioki, 27, and Nia Haqq, 25, who were buried together Friday afternoon.
One of those four is the first accused shooter: Shiquan Bellamy, who quickly became a target of investigators who obviously worked this case hard — quickly analyzing forensic evidence, pulling phone records and making sure the pieces fit.
And if the killings weren’t horrific enough, those responsible took Haqq’s engagement ring, along with gift cards the couple got just hours earlier.
Authorities can make some excellent examples. If their case is airtight, then they should shine the brightest lights they can on it.

They got a great start today, as Deputy Mayor Kabili Tayari told hundreds of mourners gathered for Muchioki’s memorial service the news — and spontaneous applause erupted.
If these four are found guilty, the roar should be heard from the Heights to the Bayonne city line.
I still believe shows of force serve a purpose when lawlessness goes on a rampage. But detectives in Jersey City proved this week that cool, calculated police work is even more invaluable.
