PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Students at Port Chester Middle School are learning about the game of tennis and how to improve their skills.

This is the second year that Port Chester Middle School has hosted a team for students ages 10 to 13.

The 20-member team kicked off its season at Garibaldi Park on April 14. The students and their club advisors -- teachers Sari Neckman and Jenna Broems -- were joined by tennis pros Sandy Hoffman from the USTA (United States Tennis Association) and Dale Balun from Sound Shore Indoor Tennis.

Students were drilled in serving, forehands, backhands and volleys. Attention was paid to the students’ form and improving their overall technique through repeated practice.

In addition, the USTA helped to jumpstart the season by providing the players with equipment to give them the best possible experience.

“We are beyond grateful for Sandy and Dale’s knowledge, expertise and positive energy,” said the two teachers. “Through ongoing instruction, the students develop endurance, stamina and determination.”

According to Athletic Director Rob Barret, “The impact of having the support of both the USTA and Sound Shore at the middle school level also will help strengthen our high school team by providing early coaching and training to our athletes,” he says. “I am looking forward to growing our partnership with both local organizations in multiple areas throughout the school district.”

USTA  has promoted the game of tennis nationally from its headquarters off Westchester Avenue in White Plains.

Sound Shore Indoor Tennis has been a Port Chester landmark on Boston Post Road for over 42 years.
