Following the sentencing of a former New Rochelle schools director and contractor who were embroiled in a corruption scheme, a former secretary at the district is in hot water with the law after allegedly stealing more than $35,000 over a five-year scam.

Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. announced this week that Elmsford resident Marisol Martell, 37, who worked as a school secretary in New Rochelle was arraigned on a 49-count felony complaint in local court over the alleged theft.

The felony complaint alleges that from October 2012, through February 2017, Martell used her position to steal over $35,000 from the district by taking 45 school district paychecks, each made payable to other staff members. In total, Martell allegedly took school district paychecks made payable to 15 separate staff members, many of whom were part-time employees and athletics coaches.

Scarpino said that after stealing the check, Martell would forge the staff members’ signatures on the back of the check and deposit the funds into her own personal bank account.

In an attempt to conceal her crimes, Scarpino said Martell also forged the school district Athletics Director’s name upon two false business records: a fraudulent School District Consultant Agreement and a fraudulent School District Requisition Purchase Order. Those two false records allowed Martell to obtain over $4,000 from the district that she then used in an attempt to conceal a series of earlier thefts.

Martell was arrested and charged with one count of grand larceny as a crime of public corruption, third-degree grand larceny and 47 counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument, all felonies. She was remanded to the Westchester County Jail on Tuesday afternoon.
