Most of those who commented on The New Rochelle Daily Voice's Facebook page said they don't mind.
Resident Lesley Ann Longo said, “I won’t miss the mail on Saturday,” and Leslie Howard agreed, adding, “Nope, not gonna miss the junk mail or the occasional bill.”
Others said they didn’t see the necessity for Saturday delivery, since there are so many other ways to deliver messages. Sharon Rose commented, “Eh, fine with me! So many things are electronic these days it really doesn’t matter.”
Another resident, Momi Luvsj, commented, “People still get paper mail?!”
The new delivery schedule will begin the week of Aug. 5. Packages will continue to be delivered six days a week, and any post offices currently open on Saturdays will remain open.
Madeline Ortiz was in the minority among readers who commented. She wrote, “I will miss my Saturday mail. For years they have been delivering, of course it will be missed.”
The Postal Service expects the move to save about $2 billion a year. Ongoing financial challenges prompted the Postal Service's Board of Governors to speed up a restructuring of operations.
“The American public understands the financial challenges of the Postal Service and supports these steps as a responsible and reasonable approach to improving our financial situation,” said Patrick R. Donahoe, postmaster general and CEO of the service, in a release.
“The Postal Service has a responsibility to take the steps necessary to return to long-term financial stability and ensure the continued affordability of the U.S. Mail,” he said.
Resident Latoya N. Thomas said she will miss Saturday mail, adding, “But they have a lot of costs and no money.”
As of noon Wednesday, 57 percent of The Daily Voice's readers in southern Westchester who voted in our poll said it was a good idea to cut Saturday mail service.
