An 18-year-old man was arrested months after he allegedly stole a mailed check from Long Island and deposited it for himself.
Nassau County Police announced it had arrested Andrew Herrera, age 18, for his alleged role in stealing an Atlantic Beach check nearly a year before, in March 2023.
The victim, a 69-year-old man, first mailed the $8,000 check from the Atlantic Beach Post Office, at 1848 Park Street.

With less than a week to go until Election Day, the race to be New York’s next governor remains close, according to new polling.
Incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul has a 4.8 percent lead over her Republican challenger, Rep. Lee Zeldin, 49.8 to 45 percent, according to a Real Clear Politics (RCP) average of polls released Wednesday, Nov. 2.
Hochul’s lead has shrunk dramatically since August 2022, when a RCP average of polls showed her leading Zeldin by 18 percentage points, 53 to 35 percent.

NYC Woman Wins $1M Mega Millions Prize
A New York woman claimed a $1 million Mega Millions prize.
Lisa Nicotra, of Staten Island, claimed the second prize for matching the first five numbers in the Tuesday, July 26, Mega Millions drawing, New York Lottery reported on Monday, Sept. 26.
The winning numbers were 07 29 60 63 66 Mega Ball 15, NY Lottery said.
She received her prize as a single, lump-sum payment of $612,240 after required withholdings, the lottery said.
The ticket was purchased at Soham Enterprises, which is located at 1774 Forest Ave. on Staten Island, NY Lottery reported.

A restaurant chain that specializes in açaí bowls has opened a new location on Long Island.
Baya Bar held the grand opening of its Garden City location on Saturday, June 4, according to an announcement on the eatery's Facebook page.
The new eatery, located at 301 Nassau Boulevard, offers a selection of açaí, kale, pitaya, and coconut bowls, along with smoothies and fresh juices.
The chain also operates locations in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan, and locations in Nevada and Louisiana.
Man Injured In Fall From Long Island Hotel Balcony ID'd As Coast Guardsman
A man who suffered serious injuries after falling from a hotel balcony on Long Island has been identified as a US Coast Guardsman, according to friends.
Alexander “AJ” Keating, age 24, was on a ninth-floor balcony at around 12:45 a.m. Monday, May 23, when he fell over a railing at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge, Suffolk County Police said.
Keating, a native of North Andover, Massachusetts, survived the fall and was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition, said police.

Man Critically Injured After Car Crashes Into Truck On Long Island Expressway
A man was seriously injured when a car crashed into a truck overnight on the Long Island Expressway, according to authorities.
It happened around 1:35 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 in Dix Hills.
Koray Kurulgan, age 30, was operating a 2005 MINI Cooper eastbound on the expressway, near Exit 52, when the vehicle crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer that was parked on the right shoulder, Suffolk County Police said.
Kurulgan, of Staten Island, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip in critical condition, police said.
