During a Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 11, the Connetquot Central School District honored the three staff members – Lori Stellwagen, Amy Loretta, and Samantha Gallo — for saving the lives of two students who were choking. A school board member in Connecticut was punched during a contentious meeting meant to be about a high school mascot. In Hartford County, a man punched a board of education member during a special meeting held in Glastonbury to discuss the high school’s mascot, which was changed from the Tomahawks to the Guardians last year, much to the dismay of some. Files stolen from a New York school district have reportedly been posted on the dark web following a ransomware attack after hackers did not receive ransom payments. A school district on Long Island is opting to close a pair of elementary schools over the summer due to declining enrollment. The Northport-East Northport School District voted 5 to 2 this week to shutter the Bellerose Avenue and Dickinson Avenue elementary schools, despite protestations from parents. All but one school district on Long Island approved area school budget and bond proposals. In total, 123 school districts saw their budgets passed, though voters in Wyandanch rejected a proposed $77.8 million that represented a 40.93 percent tax increase by a 149-332 tally. A proposition to limit the number of students eligible for bus rides also failed 162-310.
