A man was critically injured when he was hit by a police vehicle while crossing Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont, according to Nassau County Police.
While responding to an "aided case" a Nassau County Police Department ambulance with lights and siren activated on Monday, July 22 at 8:16 p.m., the police medic driving proceeded to make a right turn from northbound School Road to eastbound Hempstead Turnpike and reportedly struck a 26-year-old male pedestrian who was attempting to cross Hempstead Turnpike near that corner, police said.
As a result of the accident the pedestrian reportedly suffered a head injury, was transported to an area hospital, was admitted and is listed in critical condition, according to Nassau County Police.
The accident is under investigation.
