Souvlaki Street officially opened in North Bellmore on Sunday, June 5, owner Alexandros Katehis said.

Katehis, a resident of Bethpage, said he has worked in the restaurant industry for 35 years, previously operating restaurants in Greece and Brooklyn.

"All my life I've worked in restaurants," he said.

The new restaurant is located at 1904 Newbridge Road.

The menu is simple, emulating a gyro restaurant in Greece. In addition to gyros, it features Souvlaki, burgers, salads, and pita wraps.

Katehis said the Kotobacon pita wraps, chicken gyro, and Souvlaki are the most popular items on the menu.

He said the business has been doing even better than he expected, adding that customers have been giving him positive feedback about the food and the service.

"They love the place," he said. "They love the food."

Online reviewers have also shared their initial reactions to the restaurant since it opened.

"Needs a 6th star!!!!! Hands down the best chicken gyro in Nassau County by far. The french fries are hand cut, we couldn't stop eating them," Stevie Z., of Massapequa, said in a Yelp review. "The owner was very friendly and welcoming."

Other reviewers praised the different sauces the restaurant offers and the portion sizes.

"We've been looking forward to trying this place out since it opened," Mike A., of Long Island, said in a Yelp review. "I stopped in tonight and got a family platter for two, with chicken and lamb gyro meat as well as eggplant dipping sauce, tzatziki sauce, and spicy tzatziki sauce. It also came with french fries, pitas and a salad. Everything was excellent, and had a wonderful flavor to it. Everything had a good spice sprinkled onto it, and the portions were great as well."

The restaurant is open Mondays through Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 8:30 p.m.
