Petco Makes a Home in Mount Kisco

A new neighbor arrived in Mount Kisco this month: Petco. The pet superstore recently opened in the Mount Kisco Square shopping center at 360 N. Bedford Road. Petco is yet another new business to open in town, along with Doc’s Nutrition Depot last Thursday and Westchester Burger earlier this month.

Petco, which occupies CVS’s former site, joins Fed Ex/Kinko’s, Mana Thai and Radiance Medspa in the complex. This chain location is large enough for a grooming station in addition to rows of pet care products and a wall of fish tanks. Dogs can visit the puppy salon for a full-service treatment or just a hair cut.

Sales associate John Mouris, who owns three dogs himself, said he is impressed by the store's speedy popularity.

“They seem to be pretty busy. There’s been appointment after appointment and we just opened so that’s pretty amazing,” he said.

Melissa Acosta, 15, of Bedford Hills visited the chain store location last Tuesday with her father Luis and their dogs Toby the beagle, and Bella the toy poodle, both 1. They were there to buy a new leash for the pups. Toby and Bella chewed up the old ones, Melissa said.

Petco also carries some unusual pet products one may not find everywhere, items that, for the most part, only pet parents will know exist.

Jill Fazzinga of Bedford Hills, came to the store with her purebred pug Bennie, 7. Fazzinga was looking for one such unique product: “pill pockets,” which she said are small beef-flavored capsules that camouflage meds so dogs will take them without a fuss.

Petco’s opening in Mount Kisco adds fuel to a current hot topic of discussion about spurring commercial growth in a flagging economy. This issue has grown to be a focus in town, with the recent small business summit hosted by Mayor Michael Cindrich and the birth of the “Occupy Main Street” group, which rallied earlier this month to discuss ways to bring in new businesses to fill up vacant storefronts downtown.

For those interested in a job, Petco is hiring sales associates. Applicants can go to Petco.com.
