The blaze began on Friday, May 31, around 2:45 a.m. at 38 Park Ave. in Bedford Hills.
Responding police and firefighters soon realized that three people were trapped inside, according to Assistant Chief Zachary Patierno of the Bedford Hills Fire Department.
Arriving police soon found a 35-year-old woman hanging from a small bathroom window in distress who told officers her two children were still inside. Bedford Police officers then kicked in the rear door and followed the cries of a 10-year-old before successfully finding him in the heavy smoke and pulling him from the residence.
To find the second child, officers began breaking windows and removing air conditioning units. Eventually, they heard a faint cry and found a "terrified" 9-year-old child on an elevated window, police said.
All three victims were found to be alert and conscious and were taken to Westchester Medical Center to receive further care for smoke inhalation.
Crews then continued efforts to extinguish the blaze, which was found in the home's basement. This was made difficult thanks to the heavy smoke that filled the building, Patierno said, adding that despite the challenges, firefighters were eventually successful in putting out the blaze.
The fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature, according to Bedford Police.
