Ghent Man Sexually Abuses Young Child, Police Say
A 52-year-old man from the region is facing charges after allegedly sexually abusing a young child. Columbia County resident Robert Schaefer, of Ghent, was arrested Monday, Sept. 18, by New York State Police. According to troopers, Schaefer sexually abused a victim under the age of 11. Investigators did not elaborate on his relationship to the alleged victim. Schaefer is charged with felony sexual abuse and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child. He was arraigned in Kinderhook Court, where a judge ordered him held at the Columbia County jail on $5,000 cash bail.

Nextdoor App's 'Unauthorized' Letters To Neighbors Irk Ghent Woman
A New York woman is none too happy with the social media site Nextdoor after claiming the company “hacked” her name to advertise its services. Columbia County resident Celeste Alexander, of Ghent, recently discovered that Nextdoor has been sending out letters to her neighbors, inviting them to join the site, according to a post in the Facebook group Chatham New York Community Board. Elderly Man Broke Into Ghent Home For 'Sexual Gratification,' Police Say
An elderly man is facing charges after allegedly breaking into a home in New York's Capital Region. Troopers in Columbia County began investigating after getting reports of a break-in at a home in the town of Ghent on Wednesday, Nov. 23, according to State Police. Investigators determined that 68-year-old Terry Mullen, of Lee, Massachusetts, entered the home illegally “for the purpose of his own sexual gratification.” There were no reports of injuries or sexual assaults stemming from the incident. College Students Driving Home For Thanksgiving Killed In Head-On Crash In Ghent
Two New York college students who were heading home for Thanksgiving were killed in a fiery crash that left a third person with life-threatening injuries. Emergency crews in Columbia County were called at around 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, with reports of a serious crash on State Route 9H in the town Ghent, near the Columbia County Airport. When deputies arrived, they found one of the vehicles fully engulfed in flames, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said. Larceny Complaints Lead To Arrests, Takedown Of Columbia County Crime Ring
An investigation into stolen catalytic converters landed eight Columbia County residents in jail. Investigators had been looking into numerous larceny complaints around the Claverack area since December 2021, according to New York State Police.
