Carver Alumni Launch Campaign To Raise Money For Scholarships In Norwalk NORWALK, Conn. – Alumni of the Carver Foundation of Norwalk are joining together to raise and maintain $100,000 annually for scholarships so that this year’s high school graduates can pursue their college dreams. Carver is reaching out to any individuals who have attended the center in its 77 years to donate money for the Richard N. Fuller Sr. Scholarship Fund, which assists underprivileged youth with the costs of attending college. Norwalk Nonprofits Enjoy Sharing Proceeds Of Mayor's Ball NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling presented Person-to-Person and the Norwalk Senior Center with checks for $12,500 on Thursday. The checks are the proceeds of the annual Mayor's Ball, which was held Jan. 23 at the Continental Manor. Rilling called the ball "the social event of the year" and said that nearly 600 people attended. He credited the former Mayor Frank Esposito with starting the tradition of the Mayor's Ball, and subsequent mayors for continuing it. Darien Woman Indicted In Theft Of $800K From Veterans Service Group DARIEN, Conn. -- A Darien woman charged with embezzling $800,000 from a veterans service organization has been indicted on federal fraud and tax evasion charges. Cynthia Tanner, 53, was arrested in June 2014 on first-degree larceny charges after Darien police said she embezzled money from the National Veteran Services Fund, a Darien-based nonprofit where she worked as a bookkeeper. Norwalk's Maritime Aquarium Seal Predicts Future In New Samsung Ad NORWALK, Conn. -- The Maritime Aquarium's seal Orange is continuing her habit of predicting the future in a new advertisement for the Samsung Galaxy. Orange is featured in a new online ad for Samsung that is part of its series "Predicting the Next." Orange, a North Atlantic Harbor Seal, was chosen after Samsung discovered the Maritime Aquarium's seals have a habit of trying to predict Super Bowl winners. Norwalk Police Seek Thieves Who Stole Devices Worth Thousands From Best Buy NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk police are seeking information on suspects believed to have stolen several thousands of dollars worth of GPS and Fit Bit devices from Best Buy. Police said that on March 28 at about 7:30 p.m. several suspects entered the Best Buy on Connecticut Avenue and stole the Garmin GPS's and Fit Bit watches. The suspects are believed to have committed similar crimes in Massachusetts and New York, according to police. Danbury Mayor Spells Out $237 Million Budget Proposal DANBURY, Conn. – Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton has proposed a $237 million budget for the 2015-16 fiscal year that would see the mill rate increase 2.39 percent. The overall increase to the operating budget of about $2 million is less than 1 percent, Boughton said when presenting his budget proposal to the City Council at its meeting Tuesday night. Suspect In Darien Cop Killing Indicted On Unrelated Gun, Drug Charges DARIEN, Conn. -- A person of interest in the 1981 shooting death of a Darien police officer has been indicted on unrelated federal drug and firearm charges, U.S. Attorney Deirdre Daly announced Tuesday. Construction Equipment Stolen From Norwalk's Nathan Hale Middle School NORWALK, Conn. -- Someone stole $23,000 worth of equipment from a construction site at Nathan Hale Middle School, according to Norwalk police. The theft was reported Monday morning by the site manager overseeing work at the playing fields in the back of the school, police said. The manager approached the school resource officer and reported that he had come to work and found someone had cut the outer gate to the work site. Westport Man Charged With Trespassing On Town Property WESTPORT, Conn. -- A Westport man was arrested on trespassing charges after police found him sleeping at the Baron's South property. Frano Lesko, 50, was charged with third-degree criminal trespassing. He was unable to post $500 bond and went to court Monday. Officers were called to the property Sunday evening on a report of vandalism to the town-owned building, police said.
