Free Sports Injury Hotline Assists Westchester Athletes

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – As the weather grows warmer and athletes return to sports fields, the Westchester Orthopaedic Institute would like to remind county residents about its free Sports Injury Hotline.

Michael Mirabella, the athletic trainer responsible for fielding calls from parents, trainers, and local high school and college coaches, said many common sports injuries occur early in the season, when bones and joints are not accustomed to the stress put them on by sports.

"The best thing young athletes and parents can do after a sports-related injury is to not delay in seeking help or an expert opinion," Mirabella said in a news release. "The longer the injury goes without attention and rehabilitative treatment, the longer it will take to heal completely.”

Mirabella helps callers arrange any needed testing, physician appointments or physical therapy as soon as possible. Any high school or college-age athlete can call the Sports Injury Hotline, regardless of insurance coverage. The Westchester Orthopaedic Institute can provide X-rays, MRI tests and other evaluations at its White Plains location, if necessary.

The hotline is run out of Westchester Orthopaedic Associates and is supervised by Dr. Louis McIntyre, a orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine expert who is on staff at  White Plains Hospital Center.
