The break-in occured around 7:15 last night near the corner of Oak Street and Central Avenue, reports show.
The victim told police he shouted and scared off the intruder who was in his Chrysler Town & County.
Police chased after and found Dionte L. Simmons, 25, of Paterson, who was charged with burglary and taken to the Bergen County Jail, with a $30,000 bail.
Simmons spent a little over a year combined time between May 2007 and March 2009 for a pair of drug convictions out of Passaic County, state records show.
This afternoon, a Fair Lawn police department spokesman confirmed that Officers Paul Donohue, Donald MacIsaac, Louis Failla and Anthony Lugo went to the neighborhood on the call and soon after spotted Simmons running across Maple Avenue.
According to Sgt. Richard Schultz: “Officer Paul Donohue. Officer Donohue stopped the suspect, Dionte Simmons and through his investigation determined that Simmons was the male seen inside the Oak St car. Simmons was then placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters where he was formally charged with Burglary of an automobile.
“This is an example of a partnership that makes a difference; residents and police working together to reduce crime while making a difference.”
Simmons is due in Municipal Court tomorrow night at 7, Schultz said.
