A 14-year-old driver and 15-year-old passenger who were caught after crashing a stolen SUV during a pursuit from Route 3 to Route 21 were carrying key fobs from vehicles swiped as far south as the Jersey Shore, Clifton police said. The death of a man whose body was recovered from the Passaic River following a police chase was being investigated by county and state authorities, a family member said she was told. Meanwhile, she and other loved ones wait in anguish for answers. Thief Steals Newark Police Car
A thief who stole a marked Newark police car Thursday was captured a short time later in Nutley, authorities said. Authorities followed the vehicle on GPS after it was stolen at a shopping center on McCarter Highway (Route 21). At one point it was pegged near the Belleville Turnpike bridge from North Arlington, said police who were monitoring the incident. The vehicle then headed north on Route 21 before it somehow became disabled on the highway, they said. A driver who topped 100 miles an hour on Route 21 before eluding pursuing Clifton police on the streets of Newark was later arrested as his Morris County home, authorities said. A Nutley driver intentionally rammed a Clifton police car in Newark, ending a high-speed chase that began after he was originally stopped on Route 3, authorities said. A Door Dash driver survived after she and her car were swept through a blocks-long underground tunnel and into the Passaic River during Monday's storm, city police said.
