The phone was inside a 25-year-old Newark man’s pocket when it was snatched at the 14th Street PATH station in Manhattan around 8:30 this morning, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
The suspect’s image was caught by a video surveillance camera at the station and the phone’s GPS tracked him as he boarded a PATH train to New Jersey, Pentangelo said.
As uniformed Port Authority officers approached the corner of Montgomery Street and Bergen Avenue, he said, they heard the phone pinging in the hand of 38-year-old Glen L. Tyson, a registered sex offender from Jersey City.
“You could say he was caught red-handed,” Pentangelo said.
Officer Angel Lopez took Tyson into custody.
Tyson has nine felony convictions from 17 prior arrests, including one for a 1999 sexual assault, Pentangelo said. He also had an outstanding warrant from Hudson County.
Port Authority police charged him with receiving stolen property
