The first call came in at 12:43 p.m., Police Chief Frank Regino told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Firefighters from Hillsdale and Park Ridge assisted their counterparts from Westwood, who found the camper engulfed.

Both that and an enclosed trailer next to the destroyed vehicle are owned by a company that does landscaping for the shopping center, Regino said.

The enclosed trailer sustained minor damage, the chief said.

The outside of the building and part of the roof were charred, but no interior damage resulted, he said. Firefighters evacuated the Kmart and the neighboring Harmon store as a precaution, he said.

Employees who had gathered in the parking lot out front during what had been a light drizzle quickly ran for cover when the clouds opened up.

Investigators from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s arson unit, along with a Westwood detective, are trying to determine the cause of the fire, Regino said. There are no preliminary indications either way.
