CVP EXCLUSIVE: A 67-year-old Mahwah man was taken to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood as a precaution after he drove his Mercedes sedan around barricades and into a utility trench inches from a gas main in Westwood this afternoon.

Westwood Police Chief Frank Regino said his officers issued summonses for careless driving and driving on a closed road.

Hillsdale police issued him a summons for skirting the barricades following the mishap outside the KMart Plaza on Broadway at the border of both towns.

A PSE&G crew wasn’t in the trench when the car rolled into the hole, Regino said.

“Luckily it didn’t hit any gas lines,” the chief said.
