The leak, apparently caused by an explosion in the line, was reported at Schraalenburgh and Closter roads around 8 p.m., emergency management officials said.

They and a PSE&G crew were at the scene. Norwood firefighters and EMS joined their Closter and Harrington Park colleagues there, as well. Old Tappan units remained on standby.

The Harrington Park Elementary School on Harriot Avenue and the Closter Senior Citizens Center on Closter Dock Road were being used as temporary shelters for about an hour.

Residents began returning to their homes just before 9 p.m.
