“It’s a great day for the United States of American, the county of Bergen, and the borough of Emerson,” said Mayor Louis Lamatina. “We can serve our most deserving veterans of foreign wars by erecting affordable housing for the most needy.”

The Peter DeBaun House, a circa-1770 building, will be restored as part of the Emerson Veterans Supportive Housing development on Main Street.

American Legion Post 269 owns the building and is leasing it to the non-profit Housing Development Corporation of Bergen County for a dollar a year.

Plans are for seven duplexes with 14 one-bedroom units.

Completion is expected by next Memorial Day.

“We can never fully repay the men and women in our armed services who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect us," County Executive Jim Tedesco told those gathered, "But we have a moral obligation to make sure affordable homes are always within reach.”

"The men and women who have faithfully served our country, deserve safe, affordable housing and community support as civilians, especially those who became disabled as a result of their service," said American Legion Post 162 Commander Zoltan Horvath of Hillsdale.
