Atlantic City's Historic Firehouses Receive Grants For National Register, Preservation Atlantic City won a $50,000 grant to place two of its historic firehouses on the National Register. Architects would be hired to draft a nomination and the listing would help secure additional federal funds for their restoration and preservation. The Underrepresented Community Grants totaling $1.2 million in 16 states are aimed at shining the light on historic sites in predominately African-American neighborhoods and restoring them. Search Pinpoints Lost Black Burial Ground On Property Of NJ Grammar School A tireless two-year search ended with the discovery of a Black cemetery on the grounds of a New Milford grammar school, a borough councilwoman announced. “The old burying ground is at the north end of the B. F. Gibbs Elementary School,” said Councilwoman Hedy Grant, who’d been searching for the site. “More specifically, it's on the field just east of the parking lot." Fire That Destroyed Historic NJ Retreat For Celebrities Under Investigation Authorities are investigating a fire that broke out at a historic Somerset County home once a retreat for New Jersey celebrities. Fire companies from several towns responded to 751 River Road in Hillsborough around 4 a.m. after 9-1-1 calls came in Thursday, Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson said.  The home -- which was being renovated -- was nothing but a pile of rubble after firefighters extinguished the two-alarm blaze. No injuries were reported.
