The BCSPCA operates out of the prosecutor's office — in Hackensack and Paramus — and responds to 350 cases of animal cruelty every year, Chief Roni Wildoner told Daily Voice.
"It's important to report animal cruelty neglect not only for the animals involved, but because often children, senior citizens and other criminal activities are associated," she said.
The following are examples are animal cruelty, Wildoner said:
- no food
- no water or frozen/dirty water
- improper/no shelter from the elements
- lack of vet care
- flea infestations
- grooming issues
- matted coat/long nails
- animals used in fighting or baited
- hoarding situations
- abandonment and physical abuse
"Animal cruelty needs to be reported," Wildoner said. "You never know who it can affect.
"Our main objective is not to take people’s animals away, it’s to educate the owner and have them correct the issue at hand. If they don’t, then we have to take further action, sometimes immediately."
