Restaurateur Finds La Famiglia, Success In Poughkeepsie's Little Italy POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Brandon Walker’s love of family – and good grub – both run deep. So it is no surprise that the Brooklyn-born chef decided to open his first restaurant in Poughkeepsie’s historic Mount Carmel neighborhood, where dozens of Italian mom-and-pop shops and restaurants once thrived. When Essie’s, an elegant yet casual eatery, opened its doors at 14 Mount Carmel Place last summer, Walker found himself being welcomed with open arms. Many members of the community, which dates back to the early 1900s, popped in to greet Walker and to share stories of Little Italy’s history. One …

Trump's Words May Be Softer, But Only Actions Count, Say Lowey, Maloney Although President Donald Trump may have softened his tone when outlining his goals in his first speech to Congress, it is his actions, rather than his words, that concern two Democratic members of Congress the most. Sean Patrick Maloney, who represents the 18th district, and Nita Lowey, who represents the 17th, reacted Wednesday to the Tuesday address. Maloney said he was “all for it,” if Trump wants to work together to rebuild roads and bridges, fight the heroin epidemic, or create good-paying jobs for Hudson Valley residents. “Unfortunately, actions speak louder than words,” he said. T…

Former Westchester DA DiFiore Delivers Her First 'State Of Our Judiciary” Mount Vernon native Janet DiFiore used her first speech as the state’s top judge to point to a reduction in case backlogs and delays and to announce reforms she says will “enhance the delivery of justice for all New Yorkers.” The Democrat and former Westchester County district attorney delivered her take on the "State of Our Judiciary" at the Bronx Hall of Justice on Wednesday, Feb. 22. Her choice of site was a departure from a longstanding tradition of delivering the address at Albany’s Court of Appeals Hall. DiFiore said she chose to speak in the Bronx because the court system …

A Young Justin Bieber, Who Celebrates 23rd B-Day, Made Splash In Fishkill FISHKILL, N.Y. – Although swimming was probably the last thing on their minds, a gaggle of teenage girls just happened to pick the perfect spot to cool down their “Bieber Fever” in 2009. They screamed, cried and clutched each other as the then-15-year-old Canadian pop sensation Justin Bieber, who turns 23 Wednesday, took to the tiny Pepsi Stage at Fishkill’s Splashdown Beach, aka America’s Biggest Little Water Park. Looking very much like the skinny kid he was back then, the Biebs rocked his signature bangs, a black hoodie and sneakers as he crooned “One Less Lonely Girl” and the crowd swoo…

Friends Of Mount Pleasant Girl Fighting Cancer Raise $50,000 To Help Others MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – Forget going to the Oscars; Gia’s Glam Gala was the glitziest and most prestigious event to be this past weekend … at least in Mount Pleasant. The star of the hour was little Gia, a 6-year-old Mount Pleasant girl who has been battling the rare childhood cancer since last fall. The third most common type of cancer in children, most of whom are under the age of five, N…
