Serial Verona Church Vandal Takes It One Step Further: Arson, Cops Say A 42-year-old Verona man with a history of vandalizing a Catholic church in Verona was charged with intentionally setting a fire there  on Thursday, April 4, authorities said. At 3:33 a.m., Verona police responded to Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church on Lakeside Avenue and observed a heavy smoke condition, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II and Verona Police Chief Christopher Kiernan said. Firefighters were called to the scene and quickly extinguished the blaze, authorities said. At 1:04 a.m., the officers were on patrol when they observed a white Honda Accord parked in the middle of the roadway on Martin Road, police said.  As officers attempted to check on the vehicle, they saw someone running from a driveway into the awaiting vehicle, police said. At 3:26 p.m., a Floyd Road resident was approached by three men who demanded her car keys and proceeded to punch her in the head and face, knocking her to the ground, police said. The suspects fled in her car and the vehicle they arrived in, police said. The driver of the Toyota wagon was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries after the crash at 50 Pompton Avenue in Verona around 7 a.m., police said.
