Convicted Killer Flees Lyndhurst Shoplifting-Turned-Robbery, Nabbed By Alert Officer
A habitual offender who once served time for aggravated manslaughter was nabbed by a Lyndhurst police officer after he assaulted a security guard who tried to stop him from shoplifting, authorities said.
Johannes Vanwageningen, 37, recently of Bloomingdale, loaded a shopping cart with merchandise, then bypassed the checkout lanes and headed out the door, Detective Lt. Vincent Auteri said.
Loss prevention officers tried to stop him, but Vanwageningen pushed past one of them and ran off, leaving the packed shopping cart behind, the lieutenant said.

Drug buyers flocked from inside and out of Paterson to a squat apartment house in the Silk City as detectives watched.
After picking off several buyers, police moved in, seizing three dealers – one of them only 16 years old.

Franklin Lakes PD: Daytime DWI Driver's Sedan Hits Mailboxes, Sign, Guard Rail
An intoxicated driver from Bloomingdale unsuccessfully tried to flee after his sedan slammed into two mailboxes, a street sign and a guard rail along a stretch of road in Franklin Lakes, authorities said.
Thomas Bleeker, 66, was hospitalized with undetermined injuries following the 2:30 p.m. crash on Sunday, Capt. Robert Lyon said.
Bleeker's Toyota Camry had struck the mailboxes and sign along High Mountain Road between Valley Road the Route 208 ramps before hitting the guard rail, the captain said.

Late-Night Blaze Destroys West Milford Home
No one was home when a roaring fire consumed a West Milford home Monday night, displacing its three residents, responders said.
The blaze broke out in the 2½-story Cape Cod on Macopin Road, south of Bubbling Springs Park, just after 8:45 p.m., Police Detective Sgt. Eric Darnsteadt said.
The fire went to four alarms a little over an hour later and then a fifth 20 or so minutes after that.

This is how Bloomingdale Mayor Jon Dunleavy was being remembered Sunday morning, the day after his death was announced by the borough on Facebook. It was not clear how Dunleavy died.
