Lyndhurst Football Players Continue Careers In College Lyndhurst Football Players Continue Careers In College
Lyndhurst Football Players Continue Careers In College LYNDHURST, N.J.– Oluwayomi Olasehinde and Ryan Smith of Lyndhurst never thought they’d play football beyond high school. Olasehinde didn’t even think he was going to play the sport. “I came in thinking I was going to play soccer,” said “Yomi” who moved to the U.S. from Nigeria a decade ago. But this fall, Olasehinde, Smith, Matt DeMarco and Mike Cooper will be continuing their gridiron careers in college. “It’s truly an honor to see us play at the next level,” said DeMarco, a 6-foot, 205-pound linebacker. He’ll follow in his coach Rich Tuero’s footsteps and suit up for Montclair State. …

Hasbrouck Heights Sprinter, 11, In The Running For National Nod HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J.– Anthony DiLascio burst around the turn on the track at Hasbrouck Heights' Depken Field while his father and coaches looked on. Anthony, 11, was getting in some final work before flying to the West Coast to compete in the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Sacramento -- the first Heights track athlete to advance this far, his coaches said. "It's a pretty cool thing," the sixth-grader said. "Over the last three years I've had a lot of good training that propelled me to this. I've been running, sprinting – everything I can p…

Former Demarest Flight Attendant Falls For Dog Grooming DEMAREST, N.J.– It's not easy for dog groomer Janusa "Jan" Rivero of Demarest to separate her personal and professional lives. Not that she'd want to. "For me, they are inextricably tied," said the former flight attendant, who owns and operates Jan's Dog House from her Park Street home.  "Whether I'm in my living room or in the office, I am constantly thinking about the dogs, clients and work that needs to be done." Rivero grew up in Brazil with at least 10 dogs and cats at all times. There were also roosters, chickens, rabbits and ducks rescued by her mother…

Demarest Fire Department Donates 1977 Pumper To Nyfd DEMAREST, N.J.– Demarest firefighters didn't want their 1977 Mack pumper to end up on the scrap heap. So instead of junking it, the department is donating the award-winning vehicle to the FDNY's Family Assistance Unit, Fire Chief John McLoughlin said.  A non-profit can't donate items to another non-profit, so the pumper was put up for auction. The Demarest department bid on the truck and bought it for $8,600.  "It was well past its life expectancy," McLoughlin added. "It hasn’t been a first line piece of apparatus for years."  The nearly 40-year-old truck lacks modern …

Rutherford Camp Cartooning Counselor Is 15 RUTHERFORD, N.J.– The junior camp counselor picked up a piece of chalk and began drawing on one of the brick walls of Washington School in Rutherford. As 15-year-old Aidan McHugh went about his work, he was approached by the camp director, Jill Budunich – not to reprimand but to compliment him. "I feel drawing is the most versatile, free, creative thing you can do," Aidan said.  Budunich selected the teen to lead a cartooning elective inside the gym for first-through-fourth-grade campers.  Aidan provides pencils and gets the rest of the supplies from the school's art room.  &qu…
Fair Lawn Single Mom Heeds Call To Help Others Fair Lawn Single Mom Heeds Call To Help Others
Fair Lawn Single Mom Heeds Call To Help Others FAIR LAWN, N.J.– Tammy Irwin-Smith of Fair Lawn tries to get at least six hours of sleep every night. That isn't always easy for a single mom who is in school full-time, works part-time and is the chairwoman for Fair Lawn's Stigma-Free task force. "I wish I had more hours in the day," she said. Irwin-Smith wakes up at 4:30 a.m. – two hours before her 6-year-old, Justin – to get her work done.  "This way I get an extra 14 hours a week," said Irwin-Smith, 43, a per diem case manager for CarePlus Paramus who prides herself on organization and keeps a to-do list to map out…
