Sugar Gliders Swoop Into Methuen, Receive More Than 800 Adoption Applications
An animal shelter got a rare influx of sugar gliders - and two hedgehogs - after their owner in Western Massachusetts surrendered them. Sugar gliders are exotic pets in the possum family, according to the MSPCA-Angell, the rescue organization that took in 33 of the critters on Thursday, March 30. Boston Proposal Would Fine Pet Shops For Selling Guinea Pigs In Addition To Cats, Dogs
Cage-bound pets will get the same protections cats and dogs have if a proposed ordinance passes, according to court documents. Boston City Councilor Liz Breadon proposed an update to the city's existing humane pet shop ordinance on Wednesday, March 22 that would prohibits the sale guinea pigs in pet shops in addition to existent restrictions on the sales of dogs, cats, and rabbits. An adoption free weekend for small animals is just around the corner! As their shelters reach maximum capacity, the MSPCA-Angell and the Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) are waiving adoption fees for rabbits, guinea pigs and birds on Sept. 24-25. The MSPCA says there are nearly 200 animals in need of new homes at any one of their shelters in Boston, Methuen and Cape Cod as well as at the NEAS's shelter in Salem. About a month after 20 cats were rescued from devastating flooding in Kentucky, the MSPCA-Angell and Northeast Animal Shelter (NEAS) have welcomed another 26 cats to Massachusetts. The felines were displaced by flooding that started in July as local animal shelters struggled to house the sudden influx of animals. The MSPCA at Nevins Farm in Methuen is calling on some "very special" adopters to find homes for some very special pets. The organization announced Thursday, Aug. 11 that over 100 goats need new homes after they were rescued from a Dighton property in January. The goats, along with an adult mustang and emu, were seized after their previous owner failed to pay a $100,000 security that covered caring for animals from cruelty cases, the MSPCA said. Authorities rescued 4,000 beagles from a Virginia breeding facility, Envigo, last week over reports of horrible living conditions. The pups lived in cramped spaces with unsanitary conditions and many were mistreated and abused, reports said.
