Ammonia Leak At Breakaway Ice Arena In Tewksbury Prompts Evacuation (Update)

Residents were forced out of their homes in a Tewksbury neighborhood after an Ammonia leak at the Breakaway Ice Arena, authorities said.

The leak was originally reported at 20 Carter Road around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30, unconfirmed reports said. Tewksbury Police were telling people in the area to evacuate their homes as a result, the department said on Twitter.

While no injuries were reported, several ambulances and crews from several departments responded to the scene. The leak was contained within an hour but the area wasn't deemed safe until about 5:30 p.m., Tewksbury Police said on Twitter.

Hazmat teams were still on scene assessing the area, police said.
