Kayaker Finds Body On Riverbank Near Muller Bridge In Holyoke: Firefighters Holyoke firefighters and police were called to Muller Bridge Sunday morning after a kayaker body on the bank of a river.  Crews responded just before noon to Long Pond Road after receiving reports of the corpse washed up on the bank, the Holyoke Fire Department said. Police closed a section of the road for several hours as they investigated and cleared the scene.  Police are investigating the cause of death. Detectives have not released the identification of the body or any information on how they could have ended up in the water.

Suspicious Package Leads To Evacuation In Holyoke A suspicious package in Hampden County forced officials to order an evacuation late Thursday night, March 23, authorities said.  Firefighters were called to the area near Main and James streets in Holyoke when someone found the package around 11 p.m., the Holyoke Fire Department said. Residents in that area were asked to leave until police could figure out if it was dangerous.  Massachusetts State troopers were called to investigate and later determined it posed no threat. Residents were allowed to return home just after midnight, the fire department said.

Two Injured In Holyoke Car Crash; Fire Department Cut Driver From Car Firefighters in Hampden County had to cut someone out of their car following a crash in Holyoke over the weekend.  Crews were called to the intersection of Northampton Street and Whiting Farms Road just before 10 p.m. Sunday, March 19, after a truck crashed into a car, the Holyoke Fire Department said.  Firefighters had to break the windshield of one vehicle to get the injured out after the wreck. Though all injuries were considered minor, officials said.  Holyoke police are investigating the cause of the crash.

House Fire: Minor Injuries In Early Morning Holyoke Blaze Firefighters in Hamden County were quick to the scene of an early morning house fire after a 911.  Holyoke firefighters arrived at the 160 Pine Street home just before 5 a.m. in the driving snow when a neighbor noticed the house next door was on fire, authorities said. Despite crews best efforts the high winds pushed the flames onto a nearby home.  Crews were able to get the blaze under control after a short period and rescued a resident of the first home who had minor smoke inhalation injuries, authorities said. They were taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Police Search Connecticut River After Report Of Body In Chicopee Authorities are on the scene at a portion of the Connecticut River after a report of a body being observed in Western Massachusetts. At approximately 10:05 Sunday, July 3, a call came in reporting the possible body in the river in Chicopee, authorities said.  The Chicopee Police Underwater Recovery Team as well as the Holyoke Fire Department are on the scene.  Both motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area of Catherine Street and Sheppard Street "as this is an active operation," Chicopee Police said. Woman Trapped In Car Hospitalized After Crash In Hampden County A woman was seriously injured during a crash in Western Massachusetts. It happened around 11 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13, in Hampden County, at the intersection of Dwight and Linden streets in Holyoke. According to the Holyoke Fire Department, the car the woman was driving struck several parked cars, causing the woman to become entrapped in the vehicle. Firefighters used hydraulic tools to free her from the car. The woman was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The extent of her injuries is currently unknown. No one else was injured.

On Monday, Sept. 21, the Holyoke Fire Department responded to Holyoke Medical Center for a report of “unknown white powder” that arrived at the hospital in an envelope. Two staff members were exposed to the powder that fell out of the envelope when it opened, Holyoke firefighters said. Under the hospital’s emergency plan, the building was evacuated as a precaution. Bicycle Crash Leaves 50-Year-Old Man In Critical Condition A 50-year-old man is in critical condition after the bicycle he was riding collided with a 16-wheeler dump truck Thursday, Sept. 10. The accident happened around 11 a.m. at the intersection of Appleton and Bowers streets in Holyoke, the Holyoke Fire Department said. Firefighters had to use a forklift from Sullivan Metals for the extrication at the scene. The name of the 50-year-old man on the bicycle has not been released, but firefighters said he was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The accident is being investigated by Holyoke and State police.
