Weston, Easton See Power Outages, Road Closures

WESTON, Conn. — Customers were losing power and roads were closed as Hurricane Sandy stormed through Weston and Easton on Monday afternoon.

“There’s steady rain, but we haven’t seen downpours yet,” Sgt. Mike Ferullo, director of emergency management, said in a phone call Monday afternoon.

“The storm made a left-turn to head into the coast, and it’s breaking up in quadrants," he said. "We’re in the quadrant that gets the heaviest winds. The storm is still forming and will intensify in strength in the next couple of hours.”

Though the brunt of Hurricane Sandy hasn’t hit Connecticut yet, 1,100 homes in Weston have lost power. “There have been outages along the Godfrey Road corridor and CL&P is working on restoring the power now,” Ferullo said.

Lord’s Highway was closed near Birch Hill Road, he said.

Power outages have also been reported in Easton, according to police Chief James Candee. “Numerous trees and wires are down on Route 58 between Burr Street and Westport Road, with roads closed,” Candee said. “We’re urging people to stay home.”

Town shelters have not been opened in either town. “We’re asking people to shelter at home for the time being. We’ll probably open the shelter at the earliest Wednesday after the storm passes, and it’s safe to move around," Candee said.
