EASTON, Conn. The Easton Volunteer Fire Department extinguished two fires Monday night and found in both case that the burning permits had expired, according to police.
The first incident occurred at 5:30 p.m. when an Adams Road resident reported to police that a fire was burning in a neighboring field at the corner of Adams and Center roads. When firefighters arrived, they found that while the resident did have a valid burning permit for that day, it had expired.
The second incident occurred at 6:55 p.m. when a resident reported seeing a fire in a neighbors yard on Harvest Moon Road. Fire department officials determined that in this case also the resident's burning permit had expired. No actions were taken against the homeowners, police said.

- A resident on North Street reported to police that sometime during the evening Friday their mailbox was run over. No value was given for the mailbox. The complainant simply wanted the matter on file, police said.
- A police officer conducting routine patrols Sunday found a large quantity of carpeting, padding and linoleum flooring dumped on the side of the 400 block of Center Road. Police said the incident is still under investigation.
- An Easton women driving on Route 59 near Park Avenue hit a guardrail just after 5:30 p.m. Monday after seeing flashing blue lights coming from the car behind her, police said. According to police, when the women attempted to pull over to the side of the road to allow room for the emergency vehicle, which was later identified as an Easton Volunteer Fire Department vehicle, she accidentally hit the guardrail. No injuries were reported and the women did not receive a citation, according to police. Chief of police James Candee said Monday that Fire Department vehicle was responding to a fire call in the area.
