WESTON, Conn. For Weston parents such as Heather McNulty, losing power for Halloween was pretty worrisome. This has been really tough. Its been really hard on the kids, she said Monday.
McNulty, the mother of two young children, said her kids were upset that trick-or-treating was postponed until Saturday in town. Were not going to be here this weekend, so we are trying to find some other things to do to keep their spirits up, she said.
The family took advantage of the free activities Weston town officials have offered to the community. We just saw 'Rio,' and the kids loved it. I think it really was a good way to take their minds off of all this, McNulty said, referring to the free movies playing throughout Monday at Weston High School.
The McNulty family lost power at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. They have a generator at home, but that is being used to pump out the four feet of water in their basement left in the aftermath of the early-season snowstorm. We spent Saturday night at home, but it got too cold so we took the kids to our relative's house, she said.
McNulty said she is thankful for the town programs. I dont think we are going to need them because were staying with friends, but I think for everyone as the days without power get longer, its going to get harder.
Right now, it just feels good to get out of the house, McNulty said.
Many Weston residents have been going to the Weston Public Library to stay busy. We have had people coming in and out all day, said head librarian Karen Tartarka.
The library has been without power since the storm, but that hasnt stopped anyone from coming. We have had over a hundred people come in today and pick up books. We also have had people, who do have power, come by and get DVDs, too, Tartarka said.
The library has been doing all the checkouts by hand and plans to entering everything into the computer system once power comes back on, which we heard should be tomorrow morning, she said.
Even if power is not restored by Tuesday at the library, Tartarka said Weston residents are welcome to stop by. We want everyone to get through this as best we can and they are more than welcome to come by and pick up a book to help pass the time.
