The Friends of the Weston Library have had a busy year, working to "bring interesting speakers and events to the library for the benefit of our town," the groups president, Leslie Geller, said in a letter.
This year, the Friends have brought speakers, held luncheons and presented documentary films, Geller said. "The two films, The Merritt Parkway and Years in the Making (which we co-sponsored with the Weston Education Foundation) were informative, entertaining and offered residents an opportunity to stay in town and mingle with their neighbors over wine and cheese."
The Friends also presented a gala evening with Broadway musical director Paul Bogaev. "We were sold out," Geller said.
Consultants from the Connecticut Department of Labor came to speak about the economic climate and career counseling.
For children, the Friends sponsor a chess program run by masters at Fairfield County Chess and finish with a ranked tournament, Geller said. They also ran a program in October called Animal Embassy, which will run again in January due to popular demand.
The group also sponsors two monthly book clubs -- a Wednesday evening group led by Dr. Lisa Dresdner, an English professor at Norwalk Community College, and a Thursday morning group led by local author Diana Loevy.
The Friends also purchased the library copiers, including a color copier that can be used for 25 cents per page. "Payment continues to run on the honor system," Geller said.
