Golfer Charged With Providing Alcohol To Caddies Before DUI Crash In Darien, Police Say

A golfer at Wee Burn Country Club in Darien was arrested after allegedly imploring his caddies to drink during a round, then failing to provide them a safe ride home, police said.

Officers from the Darien Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash on Tuesday, June 25, involving a 20-year-old man from Stamford, who was arrested and charged with a DUI, police said. While he was being interviewed, the caddy told officers that he had been drinking while working at the country club.

The investigation determined that the 20-year-old had been caddying for Darien resident Blaine Hurty, 43, earlier in the day, before the accident. During the day, Hurty provided several drinks for the driver and a second caddy, both of whom were underage.

Police said that Hurty and the 20-year-old became intoxicated during the day, with Hurty urging the caddies to consume alcohol during small contests on the course, the loser of which would have to consume an entire alcoholic drink. Hurty was reportedly “somewhat forceful in encouraging the two caddies to drink.”

According to police, by the end of the day, Hurty was too intoxicated to finish his round, and he allowed the caddies to play in his place. At the end of the round, Hurty invited the caddies to the club bar for a drink, though he provided the 20-year-old with straight vodka after he asked for a beer.

When they left, Hurty failed to provide the minor with a ride home before he crashed. Police said that numerous attempts to contact Hurty went unanswered, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Wednesday, Aug. 14, Hurty turned himself in to police custody at Darien Police Headquarters, where he was charged with reckless endangerment and providing alcohol to a minor. He is currently released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear back in court on Monday, Aug. 26.
